I was going to go through northern Iowa on my recent trip but the route planner asked if I wanted to go down to I-80 to avoid weather. First time that ever happened to me, and since I was getting a great lightning show, I took the detour. In the past I have had reverse 911 say to take shelter immediately with a tornado crossing the interstate, but being in a construction zone there was nowhere to go and I couldn’t see anything. This trip I just needed to slow down a bit because the crosswinds were agitating the trailer. I very sorry about your friend and for her family’s loss. I am familiar with that shock, and don’t wish it on anyone

New topic: if you cross the borders with your favorite pooch, know that new CDC regulations go into effect in August that will prevent your dogs from crossing the border without proper paperwork from a certified vet. We would be super ticked if border patrol took our pets. Recommend you look into this and spread the word!

Good presentation of pros/cons respecting 'site lock fees'. Actually at the family owned campground we used to go to for years & years, they had no such xtra fees gimmick. They did send us the receipt when we paid a deposit and allowed our pick of a specific site. HOWEVER when we arrived we were sometimes shifted away from what we picked, and which they agreed to, onto an entirely different site. Haven't gone there for 3 years. What we pick now is thru the RESERVEAMERICA website. There you pick a specific site among 100's of sites, in the case of one in N.H., for exact dates on a campground site layout. You tag the date blocks for one day or a few weeks and pay by card in full (not just a deposit). But there's a cancellation fee if not cared for within a certain timeframe, which is to be expected. A closer to home camp we like is a city owned camping/park. They also use this RESERVEAMERICA website with same requirements of pay in full and allow you to select on a graph the site & dates you want. They do not shift you around. For this, one has to get a jump on the reservations in early Spring. You'll notice the holes in dates with a lot of sites still open for only 1 day or maybe 2. The early bird catches the worm.......... OR campsite in this case. I have a bad taste in my mouth for the 'resort style' campgrounds. Manicured, golf club quality grass lawns is not my thing. Camping with water for swimming, with shrubs, trees, and decent space between sites, that describes a real camping experience in my book.

Love when you give the news about campers. This helps us to be better aware of our country camping while still enjoying our camping experience.

The lost hiker stories perfectly illustrates why, when lost, you should STAY PUT so searchers can find you. The grown man was wandering for 10 days when he should have been only a few hours walk away from where he started. Essentially, he was evading rescuers when he thought he was calling to them. The four year old, on the other hand, was found the next day, right near where he started.

What a horrific tragedy...so so sorry for family and friends of this lovely soul...a reminder of how fragile life is.

Our overall experience with KOA has been positive, having said that I agree that there are some better than others. We have always had great customer service, so that’s a plus.

The KOA in the Black Hills (Hill City) is the nicest KOA I have ever been to.

As a Brit, that is a weird system, here we have two major and one minor clubs, plus independents. I'm only in one club called the Caravan & Motorhome Club (CAMC), they have Club Sites and Certified Locations (Sites), Club Sites are much bigger, maybe 75 to 100 pitches, usually have more facilities, more pitches, and are cheaper to club members than non-members, as a club member I might book a week on a club site that might be £220 all in (including tax), Electric Hook Up (EHU 16Amp 240vAC), usually a Service Pitch (has on-pitch potable water/grey water disposal/EHU/Free WiFi), and a Elsan Disposal Point will be a short distance away for emptying Blue or Green Chemical Cassette Toilets, and on site showers/wash rooms/toilets. They will ask for a £20 minimum deposit, and you give your bank details so they can obtain the balance on your arrival, if you don't arrive you lose the £20. No-one books a specific location on-site, but you can specify the pitch type at booking, more than two adults and they will require a small fee per night, have had an 8 years old grandson stay over one night and they charged £1.50. CL Sites are limited to a maximum of five pitches (by law), again you might have to specify a hardstanding or grass pitch at booking (usually fewer hardstanding pitches on these sites), only club members can use CL Sites and the fees are much cheaper (often as low as £10 a night), facilities might be less, EHU may be limited to a few of the pitches and the Amperage may be lower (lowest I've seen is 6Amp 240vAC), or no electricity at all, water may be a central fill point for you own barrel of potable water, central point for Elsan & Grey Water (you have to collect your grey water in a container), might be WiFi (always free but expect lower bandwidth). So far I've not needed to pay a deposit at a booking, and all contact is via email/phone, and they prefer cash payment. The facilities on-site generally reflect how long the CL Site has been in existence. Independent Sites are usually small to medium size, prices are comparable to Club Sites and CL Sites, deposits are similar at booking, facilities also can be specified at that time, but they will require payment of a deposit, and your bank details for charging on arrival, or indeed they may request the balance paid a few weeks before your arrival (you can usually opt for insurance in case you cancel). Only one site I've used charges for electricity per kW Hour, but by law they can only charge you the actual cost from the utility supplier (not allowed to profit as a reseller). Not seen how the UK compares to US in daily fees, but it seems a lot cheaper here.

Why would Grand Design hold a PR event in NYC??? There is nobody in that city who has a place to park that size of vehicle. Sometimes I wonder where these PR flacks come from!! This was an event to give the execs from Winnebago a company paid weekend in the city.

Starlink is managing demand and production. They probably also want to test it with real world (experianced) users before ramping up production. Once they get it dialed in they'll lower prices and open it up for the masses. If they opened it up at the lower price with limited production, people would stop ordering existing Starlink products and there would be a waiting period of months... this way people who want it now will buy existing product, the mini will be debugged and tested, and then production will ramp up and prices will be lowered gradually so productions and demand stay at an equilibrium. Economics 101. Nothing more, nothing less.
